• Find a mic and go to it.
• Write 3–5 minutes.
• Time yourself. Most rooms only give you 3–5 minutes, and running over is the fastest way to get cut off.
• Watch a room before you sign up. Turn up early, see how the sign-up list actually works, and get a feel for the room before you're the one on stage.
• Sign up early. Spots often fill fast or go first-come-first-served, so don't leave it to the last minute.
• Expect to bomb sometimes.
• Find your local comedy community. Search Facebook groups, local Discords, or just ask other comics after a set. Most cities have an informal network that knows more about what's really happening week to week than any single website, including this one.
